Are You Ready For Another Giveaway?? I Am!! How About 7 Yards of Fabric?

I was supposed to start another giveaway on Monday but, I really wanted to show you some fun things I was waiting for so I could add them into the giveaway.

If you have ordered from us, you have learned a little secret. I love to put a little gift in each box before it goes out the door. You never know what you will find in your box until it arrives at your door :)

Today the mailman came with the box I have been waiting for!

Lil' Twister, Little Gypsy Grippers, compact mirrors with sewing kits, and even nail files with adorable sewing goodies. These are going to be so much fun to give away!

I think our next winner should have one of each and each color!

Then they will have extras to share with their quilting friends too.

I love sharing!!

I want to share some fabric with you too.

Last Friday I went to pick up more fabric from our supplier and I happened to pick up this adorable line by Anthology called Sweet Tooth.

The colors are so much fun and they will be super cute on anything that you make!

We have 14 different fabrics and we are going to give 1 lucky winner half a yard of each fabric.

That's 7 yards of fabric - PLUS all the goodies!!

We are giving you 5 separate chances to win and recommend doing them all if you REALLY want to win!

1. Leave a comment any comment. Tell us how we are doing, tell us what we could do better, or just tell us if you are having a good day :)

2. If you decide to follow our blog (left column under what's new) or you already do follow us, leave us another comment letting us know you have.

Non-winners-who-I-adore - I will start another give away later today!

I love sharing fabric!

Does the thought of free motion quilting scare the *&$# out of you? Here are a few things to try :)

Every Tuesday night Ms. Cara from CaraQuilts hosts a wonderful Twitter chat where you get to talk with other quilters and have a really great time together.

Each week she asks questions and this week she asked do you quilt using straight lines, free motion, or patterns.

There were a few people there that had never tried free motion. I admit, the thought of trying this scared me to death. I had worked so hard on my quilt for days, hours, and sometimes weeks. Now I am going to screw it all up trying to do something I didn't understand?

So then I started buying books. And then more books. And then more books.

Here are the things I learned along the way:
  1. ALWAYS use the best thread.

Personally I like Aurofil. However, in order to discover that I liked that thread best... I had to try out several different kinds first. I recommend you do the same and get a feel for each one.

  2. Don't be afraid to mess things up.

When we make quilts, it is made with so much love that there could not possibly be any flaws in our work. Would you say your child is flawed because one ear is lopsided? No. Be proud of your work. YOU made it. How could it not be special :)

  3. Practice, practice, practice, and did I mention practice?

I screw up a lot. I admit it. Each time I get better and better. If I keep practicing I will continue to get better. You will too!
So how did I get started?

Well, I kept hearing that you should get the movement down first. I kept trying on paper but, I just couldn't get it. Then I found something that really helped.

This was my Ah-Ha moment! It was fabric that looked like exactly like the quilting I was trying to do!!

I bought up tons and went home and used this fabric as my guide. It worked!! It helped me so much. Then the next quilt I made, I used this fabric for my background and instead of quilting from the front...

I quilted from the back!! I just followed the lines :) I wish I had a picture but, the owner picked it up and took it immediately. Dang mother.

I still have about 12 yards left if you want some AND I am heading to Chicago tomorrow to get more.

I will also be looking for fabric that we can all use as backgrounds to learn new free motion techniques :) Just follow the lines until you get the hang of it!

Then when you build your confidence up, check out Mindful Meandering: 132 Original Continuous-Line Quilting Designs - Great book!

Whatever you do - Just remember.

What you create is beautiful and unique because it was made by you!!!

Just One Star - WOW. A Thank You and a Winner or Maybe Even...

When I created a post to get people involved with the Just One Star Challenge, I had no idea the impact it would have.

You have all touched my heart in so many ways and I will be forever thankful to you all.

I cannot thank you enough for spending your precious time away from your family to create these blocks for the men and women who serve for our country.

Thank you.

Enough of me balling like a baby... let's get down to some fun right?

If you didn't get a chance, please take a look at our brand new shiny 1 Choice 4 Quilting Flickr Group created just in time for the Just One Star Challenge. I hope you will post pictures of all your projects there so we can ohhhh and ahhhhh all over them together!!

It is not very hard to join Flickr or upload pictures. If you would like, I can even create a tutorial for you guys :) Just let me know if you need me too.

Alright, let's get to the winner shall we?

**drumroll please**

So in the interest of fairness, I didn't go directly to the #9 post. You see, there were a few people just posting - Hey great idea. Well, that wasn't an official entry. Soooooo

I went to the actual 9th official entry and that was.....

But then I thought, "That would TOTALLY suck if I was #9."

So I went and looked at #9.

Not only does she live where I was born but she got her guild involved too.

So I made an executive decision. Just because I can do that around here :)

They should both win!!

So congrats Lisa Marie AND Quiltzyx!! Please go to our contact us page and we will give you all the details you need.

Now the hard part, how are you going to split up those TEN yards of Sunkissed by Moda?? We have more choices now and it will be so much harder :)

For those of you that didn't win this time, you are still a winner to me!! Please stay tuned as I promise to have many MANY giveaways if you can't tell already :)

Have you seen the one that ends THIS Sunday?

P.S. I grabbed a slideshow from Flickr to show you some of the beautiful stars that were made!

SUPER Funny Convo & A NEW Giveaway With 3 Winners :))

So last week this awesome chic comes to our Facebook page and I learn from her that there is a quilt show about an hour away from me this weekend. COOL! She is going to have a booth there and I make sure to say hello.

Well, that hello cost me money!

Her booth was FULL of these other chics that were so cute!! Her company - Chic-N-Stix. They are the cutest pin cushions!!

Let me show you -

There were like 200 of these cuties. ACK! So I purchased 6 of them. One for me, one for my mom, one for Nancy who came with me, and 3 for you guys.

So here is the conversation with mom - TOO FUNNY!

Me: Mom I got you a surprise but, you can only pick out one. I like this one because it is your favorite color pink and this one because it is more modern. I know you love your Ed Hardy.

Mom: I have to pick out just one?

Me 5 minutes later: Mom, you have to pick.

Mom: I can't.

Me. Ok so pick two. I know it is hard. I picked out this frog one because you know I love frogs but, this one reminds me of Poppa.

Mom: Now I want the one that remind me of Poppa too.

Me: Mom! Fine, take 3 then and I will give away the one with the roses.

Mom: I didn't see the roses. I want that one too.

Me: MOM!!! Oh my god. *banging head*

Five minutes later, how many and which one did she take in the end? The original pink that I picked out for her and that was it - hahahahahahaha

So let's get to the giveaway and now it is YOUR turn to pick which one you want. I couldn't make up my mind until I went to take the pictures. Was it going to be the frogs or the peas in the pod? You look at the pictures and try to guess which one I had to keep :)

Yep, Diego picked it for me. But you can win the other 3 and here is how!!

We are giving you 5 separate chances to win and recommend doing them all. Remember we are picking THREE winners:

1. Answer the following question by leaving a comment on below - Which one do you want to win? The modern chic, the froggy chic, or Diego's 2nd favorite - the rose chic?

2. If you decide to follow our blog (left column under what's new) or you already do follow us, leave us another comment letting us know you have.

3. If you decide to Follow us on Twitter or you already do, leave us another comment letting us know you have.

4. If you decide to head over to our Facebook page and click on the Like Button (OR use the toolbar below). Then leave us another comment letting us know you did!

5. If you decide to blog about our giveaway and tell all of your friends, please leave us a comment letting us know you did with the URL of your blog post. This REALLY helps us spread the word about our Grand Opening and we appreciate this so very much!

P.S. Sign up for our newsletter for special offers and chances to win more prizes!

P.S.S. There is still time to win 10 yards of Sunkissed!!!

National Quilters Day - I have so much to share with you!

I am so excited! I am about to head out the door and head to The Gathering of Quilters 2011.

This show is for anyone in the Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan area and if you are coming - please let me know on Facebook or Twitter so we can say hello!

I promise to take lots of pictures for those of you who can't come and I also promise to pick up a few little goodies to give away too! I love sharing with you guys :)

Next, the Just One Star Challenge is going AMAZING!

I have several emails I need to catch up with when I get back tonight and add them to our brand new 1 Choice 4 Quilting Flickr Group. I have had major computer issues but, I think they are over now *phew*

Finally, in retail world you have to order things months in advance if you want the "latest and greatest." We didn't want to wait around for months and wanted to open our doors right away. Because of that, you may have noticed we did not have some of the latest lines from Moda.

That is all changing!

Check out the What's Coming Section because many of those lines are going to be here Tuesday even though they don't "officially" come out until May or June. We got our hands on some early and we can't wait to share with you all!

We will be adding products all weekend long so you can start ordering first thing Tuesday morning. Just remember, we were only able to get our hands on a VERY limited supply on some of these lines. If you miss out don't worry. They are coming out officially in a few months :)

Oh and one last thing, I have marked some items down 30% to get ready for the new inventory coming in. Keep watching that section as I add more but, don't wait to order. Those items have limited quantities and we need to move them out fast. I think I have almost 50 pounds of fabric arriving on Tuesday. So fun!!

I can't wait to show you everything!

I better get going to the quilt show. If you want to follow along with me today, I will be tweeting from the show. My twitter name is @1c4quilting. Don't have twitter? No worries! I will do a blog post soon too :)

Bye for now!!

This Is Where It Gets Personal - Just One Star

Yesterday we told you about a very special challenge called Just One Star Challenge.

The Semper Fi Fund is coordinating donations and I wanted to show you why this challenge meant so much to me as soon as I found out about it.

This is my daddy.

He was all dressed up for the Marine Corp Ball with my beautiful mom. Here is a secret that most people don't know... he is not my biological father. He came into my life when I was 10 years old and has been the best Daddy a girl could have.

In fact, he had such an influence on my life that I joined the Young Marines at age 12.

So here is my plea to you:

Please send in just one star.
If you can send in two, or three, or more... that is awesome.
But, imagine if we could get everyone to send in just one.

I am making mine tonight and if you don't have the fabrics you need to do it -
Email me right now with your address and I will send the fabrics to you - NO CHARGE.

Plus, you will be able to enter our special giveaway of winning 10 yards of Sunkissed. AND Rachel at P.S. I Quilt has a special give away too.

So what are you waiting for?

Go make some stars and become a star too :)

2 New Giveaways, Helping Soldiers, AND a Special Thank You.

Sorry this took a bit longer to post. I have a VERY special surprise in store for everyone but, you will have to wait until tomorrow or later tonight to learn more.

So let me get on with the good news of the day!

One of my favorite quilt bloggers is PS I Quilt Rachel Griffith. Her work inspires me to make beautiful quilts!

Today I learned about a special post she wrote yesterday called, "Just One Star."

You see, Moda wants to quilt and bind 100 quilts in 100 days for soldiers and they need our help!

They need us to make a star block, sign it, and send it to Moda. Here are the complete instructions for the Just One Star Challenge.

So simple.

The Semper Fi Fund is coordinating donations and as the daughter of a retired Marine, I knew that we had to do something special here at 1 Choice to get more people involved.

We can make a difference together.

So here is the deal -

  • Create your one star to send to Moda
  • Take a picture and put it on Flickr. Don't have Flickr? Click the contact us link above and email to me. I will put it on Flickr for you.
  • Leave a comment with the link to your star
Now for the goodies!

I really REALLY wanted to make this special. So create your star by Monday, March 21st, 10:00 PM Eastern and make sure you leave a comment!

We will randomly pick someone to win... ready?

Learning How to Play With Color Using Sunkissed by Moda

Today I want to walk you through the process of playing with color. This is not color theory 101 but, I can share with you a few tricks that you might enjoy :) So let's get started!

We will be using 1 focal fabric from the Sunkissed by Moda line called Limeaid Summer Gardern.

So let's start playing with color!

When you see this gorgeous fabric in color, your eye is immediately drawn to the greens.

Take away the green and add some Pink Sorbet. Now where does eye go?

You begin to see more of the pink pop out at you. The smaller pink flowers are coming to life and the green tones down a bit.

Now let's add a little orange to the mix.

Are your eyes starting to see a little more hint of orange in our focal fabric? Did you really notice the orange in the first few pictures?

Let's try something else!

Go back to the original green but, add the pink and orange into the mix. Now the centers of the flowers are beginning to pop out a little more with orange and pink.

Moral of the story?

Fabric is FUN. Play around with color and fabrics. If you think you may get it wrong, you are wrong.

You can't go wrong when you put your heart into a quilt. It is the little imperfections that make all of us so perfect so why can't all of our little imperfections in our quilts make them perfect too?

Now it is your turn, how do you play with color?

Do you want to see more playing with color here on our blog?

P.S.

You have until Monday to win 4 yards of Sunkissed! Make sure to enter now :)

My New Go to Quilting Resource - You Will Want This Too!

I picked up a book from Amazon that I think you will want too!

It is the All-In-One Quilter's Reference Tool Easy-To-Follow Charts, Tables and Illustrations, Yardage Requirements, Cutting Instructions, Setting Secrets, Choosing ... Piecing Techniques, Number Conversions

It does a great job helping quilters with some of the most frequently asked questions:
  • How much fabric do I need?
  • How many and what size blocks do I need to make a quilt the size I want?
  • How do I figure the percentage to enlarge or reduce when photocopying?
  • How do I cut bias binding?
  • Which needle should I use?
  • How do I sew a mitered border?
  • And more!
I take this book shopping with me and keep it on my desk next to my sewing machine.

This book has already saved me TONS of time trying to figure out measurements and I hope it will help you too :)
