OKAY!!!! Here we go with week three of the Jelly Roll Mystery Quilt Along! I think I am going to call mine the Kaleidoscope quilt. I decided to piece mine together with the four triangles meeting in the middle. I thought it was the best fit for my collection's colors and patterns. I choose to use Happy Go Lucky by Bonnie and Camille. The colors made me excited for spring which here on the east coast has finally sprung!
Now again this quilt gives us a variety of ways to complete the top. You can 1. Sew all of your squares together joining each seam or 2. you can add an additional 2.5" strips to separate your squares. It is totally up to you. Basically if you add the strips you'll want to take away those inches from your border. (Quilts without strips should use a 7.25" border to make up the difference.)
Here is what happened to me. I was all set to sew my strips all together and while taking photos in the bright sunshine on the green grass I was inspired to add Moda Fresh Grass yardage as my strips. If you didn't know Green in Pantone's color of the year and the green against my squares coordinated perfectly.
My finished quilt top measures 66.5" L by 46" W. If yours varies, no problem. Everyone sews a little differently and it's okay to have some variations. Step 11
If you choose to do the 2.5 inch stripping in between. Sew them with a 1/4" seam and iron flat. If you choose not to use the strips that is okay as well and you will just sew your squares together also using a 1/4" seam.
Step 12
Begin assembling your squares as you wish. I put the green strip and then added the second square to the strip for each of the 3 set of blocks and then did the same vertically adding the strips to the 3 sets.
Step 13
Once you have your strips sewn and your set all together it's time to sew the border. Again I choose to use the Kelly Green and my border strips were 5 inches in width and the length of my 3 sets plus the interior strips. Start with long edges first.
Step 14
Now add your top border. I also used a 5" strip here and again it was the width of my top which was 46" Wide.
Step 15
Add you bottom border, iron and check out your amazing quilt top. You can see below why I decided to call my a Kaleidoscope. It reminds me of seeing the little shapes in the center span out to create beautiful colors all around! |

This looks so fantastic! I saw another quilt on Flickr with the same type of green sashing and it was so fresh looking. I just love it! Happy Go Lucky is such a perfect fabric line for spring.
I don't have any yardage at the moment that's the same length as the jelly roll strips. So my question is, if I just cut the fabric I do have (scrap/strips left over from my daughter's college quilt) and make sure they're at least 14" long and 2.5" wide, how many of those will I need? I have enough for probably 6 14" lengths ... maybe more. Just wondering if that will work for the blocks.
@Mom2mykids...yes that should work. You will need 12 total 14" strips. If you are using a jelly roll you should only need enough 14" strips to complete 2 blocks. So you would need 4 strips total to complete your last two blocks. That should work fine.
Thanks Nicole! That's what I thought, after I sat and figured it out. I found some cream-on-cream that I'd forgotten I had that should work well with the jelly roll I'm using. I'd thought about using the gray or the aqua from my daughter's quilt but they're a bit stronger than I want to use in the blocks, if that makes sense? This quilt is an experiment of sorts, but we'll probably make another with this pattern for my daughter's college roommate. My daughter's going on a church mission but we want to do something special for her roomie from this past year. They became really good friends!
