Since 1987, my husband has attended almost every single Indy 500 race. The ONLY two he missed were for his son's and nephew's graduation. They had the nerve to hold graduation on race weekend. *laughing*
So when my husband heard I had to have surgery, his first response was....
"I am still going to Indy!"
I had to laugh and say, "Of course you are honey."
Although I am completely heartbroken, all my boys just drove out of our driveway for Indy without me.
Oh how I wish I could have gone along too!! However, doctor told me today that I am having some problems with the recovery stages of my surgery and I am stuck in bed for another 2 weeks. YUCK!!
We can NOT let the guys have all the fun! We need our own race.
This Sunday, May 29th, when those Indy Cars start racing... we are going to have our own race... a Jelly Roll Race!! (Thank you know who and you know who which I will post on race day *wink*) No peeking!!

Well, hopefully, it doesn't have to be an official "Jelly Roll" I don't have any pre-cuts and I live in a small town with no quilt shop. However, a couple of weeks ago I did see some "rolls" at Wal-Mart. If that is okay and they have one tomorrow I might play along. Hubby is working this weekend so I was planning to sew anyway and this sounds like fun.
Ooooeee! This sounds like fun, fun! I have some time set aside to sew Saturday morning, AND I have a jelly roll, so count me IN :)
And I totally follow your blog!
GREAT idea, Shawna!!! I'd love to sew along this weekend, but don't know if I'll have time. We're getting ready for a 3yo birthday party and I have a dress to make. I'm so excited that you're doing this, though!
Sandi -- a jelly roll is just 40 2 1/2" strips. I'm sure you could make your own!
I already follow the blog with my Google Reader and on Facebook.
Of course, I follow your blog!

Shawna, you come up with the most creative ideas! I will be sure to check back for the instructions and I hope I will be able to give this a go. Like Sandi (comment #1) I hope we can cut our own strips if we choose to since my jelly roll collection is pretty limited.
BTW, blogger has been giving me fits the last few days so I can only post as Anonymous. I know I'm not the only one having this issue.

I'd play along too, if I had the materials and time. School is out and my bundle of kids call.

When I was a kid, we listened to the Indy 500 every year ON THE RADIO! How weird is that? (vroooom, vroooom, vroooom, only 95 laps to go, vroooom, vroooom, vroooom....) I think the jelly roll race sounds like a lot more fun!
...and I am a follower!
This sounds great fun! though I'm in the UK and have no idea what an indy race is!!!
I'm already a follower!

Soo you are married to a petrol head too. My hubby will watch anything on two wheels or four wheels. Not sure if I will be in the JR race, I only have one JR and bought it for a specific quilt, but will watch with interest at what others produce.
Sorry to hear about your condition but I hope you will recover soon!
Jelly roll race sounds exciting, but unfortunately I don't have a jelly roll with me. If I can make one of my own I'd be glad to join but I'm not sure whether it will be really possible since my sister and family has come to visit us too.
If all fails, I'd be glad to 'watch' the race!
Thanks for coming up with this amazing idea :D

Jelly roll racing has piqued my interest. I need to see the final quilt pattern before I sign up. If I can't live with it or my daughter Cor would hate it, it's not going to happen.

Sounds like a fun alternative for non-Indy fans. I, however, must do my race day ritual of listening to the race live on the radio, with the scorecard, just like I did growing up. We lived about 40 miles west of the track and the race still is not televised live in Indiana. I was in college before I saw the live broadcast. The TV coverage stinks, watching the lead car go round and round. The IMS Radio Network is so much better and up to the moment with everything that is going on.
The only time I had tix to the race it rained on Sunday, it rained on Monday, they ran the race on Tuesday. By that time I was back in Missouri at work, listening to the IMS radio network on the radio!
I am a very happy follower.
This Jelly Roll Race sounds such fun, Shawna! I really hope to join in although I find it difficult to get chance to sew at weekends and we have a public holiday here in the UK on Monday too - maybe I can get OH to take the little one out!!
The jelly roll race sounds like a hoot - unfortunately, I will be away from my sewing machine this weekend and will not be able to participate :(

But not till after I make this quilt :) We have a new quilt store openning today in town ~ a New Jelly Roll is what I will buy. Think baby ~ I have a baby shower to go to in June it will be fun.
See u on facebook.

I think this is a great idea, but unfortunately I won't be able to participate this weekend..I have company coming. and if it's the pattern I think it will be, it's one that I wanted to do so I may pick it up in Aug when all my coming and going company has stopped for a bit...I'm disappointed to miss out on the fun.
Our shop hosted a Jelly Roll Race with donated fabrics, all quilts to go to the local Humane Society. It was ridiculously fun and some of the, er, less-than-beautiful donated fabric (Dick Tracy and golf tees??) made surprisingly pretty quilts. It's a great way to use up the 'what was I thinking' fabrics without making a quilt that looks like Walt Disney threw up on it!
I a follower and I hope your recovery goes smoothly and without complications.
This would be fun! And a surprise pattern for a jelly roll quilt - exciting! thanks!
i am a follower of your blog too. thanks!
