I am so excited for today and I hope you are too!
It's time for the Jelly Roll Race!!
Are you ready to go? Well, start your sewing engines because you have the next 24 hours to complete your race!
Don't have a Jelly Roll? Create your own from your stash of fabrics really fast and let's get started!!
Pre-Race (hopefully previously completed)
Sew all your 2 1/2" strips into one very long strip ---> more details
Yellow Flag - DO NOT SKIP THIS PART OF THE RACE
Pick one side of your 1600" long strip and cut off 18." Throw this piece away. This helps make your quilt look totally random and totally awesome :)
Find the beginning and the end of your strip. Place right sides together and start sewing that beautiful quarter inch seam all the way down. When you get down to the very end, use a pair of scissors to cut the jelly roll in half, and complete the rest of the seam.
Pit Stop #1
You are now left with a strip that is 800" long. Awesome right? Don't ask your pit crew to do any ironing yet. Instead, head out for Lap #2
Lap #2
Locate the beginning and the end of the strips again. Put those right sides together and sew a quarter inch seam all the way down. Same thing as you did in Lap #1. Get to the very end, use your scissors to cut in half, and complete the rest of the seam.
Lap #3 - 5
You are doing great! Grab some water, coffee, anything it takes to keep going! Repeat the process of sewing the beginning and the end a total of 5 times. Each time your strip will get shorter and shorter and wider and wider until you have your 48" x 64" quilt!
Pit Stop #2
Head on over to the pit area and press those seams! Press them in the same directions and trim your sides up so they are nice and even.
Pit Stop #3
Put your beautiful new quilt on a chair, the floor, outside in the grass, or anywhere else you can and snap up a picture of that gorgeous new quilt. Head on over to our Flickr, upload your picture, and add it to our 1 Choice 4 Quilting Group.
If your pit crew needs ANY help:

I guessed this might be the way you would have planned!
Waiting to see everybody's quilts :D
Got mine posted! I'm cara quilts on flickr too. Finished mine in just an hour.
MIne is done!!!!! Will put the pic on Flickr. WilmaNC1
Whew! That was fun! The lady in the video who finished in 35 minutes must have really had the pedal to the metal! Took me a little more than an hour, which is still a short time to come up with a cool looking quilt top. I made my own jelly roll which actually took more time than the sewing. But it gave me an idea. From now on when I'm cutting fabrics I can just cut an extra 2 1/2" strip and set it aside. Then when I have enough strips accumulated I could whip out one of these "race quilts" in short order. Might be my new "go-to" pattern for donation quilts. Thanks Shawna for all the fun! My pic is on your flickr group under the name quilts by lisa. At least I hope so -- I sign in through google which is still messing with me!
That was fun! Took me 1 hour 11 minutes and 30 seconds sewing time and I was racing! I am pleased with how it turned out. I uploaded a pic to Flickr to the 1 Choice 4 Quilting group under LisaT63. Thanks!
That was a lot of fun! I made my own jelly roll, shopping in my stash - "The Quilt Shoppe". I learned that next time I'll just throw the strips all in a bag & let them end up where they may. After I cut them, I sorted and put them in "order", trying to make sure that they were well mixed. But once I started the race, sewing & cutting, the colors I was separating, all seemed to 'clump' together! LOL I still really like it.
It took me about an hour & 45 minutes to sew it up. I'm not very speedy when sewing, but it was really easy going.
Of course, as soon as I finished & was ironing it, the sun went behind the clouds & the wind came up, but I took the best picture I could & posted it on the Flickr group.
Thanks for the fun time!
Well that was fun! It took me about an hour & 40 minutes and that includes the need to switch bobbins twice because I started with an almost empty one. I really enjoyed the process though. Picture is up in the Flickr Group. I am gap.rhonda there. Thanks for a great afternoon.
Oh my, I forgot to post here after I posted my picture! Took me about 1 hr and 45 minutes, and I really didn't race throught it. Can do it faster next time, I know there will be a next time because that is a great quilt! My flickr is posted same as here Pam Smothermon.
This was just way to much fun! I blogged my quilt (http://quiltnutcreations.blogspot.com/2011/05/did-you-race-today.html), just heading over to Flikr to post it there. Flikr name is QuiltNutOne.
I had my doubts about this method at first, until I grasped the "speed" of it. I am hooked...I see tops, backs, insides of totes, baby quilts, and a timid light at the proverbial end of my stash tunnel! LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Thank you for showing me to the "starting line"! YiaYia Barbie/thepiececorps
ps...sorry but I could not get my wordpress login to work 8-(
I am logged in however...
This was so much fun. It was a surprise opening each section to see what the quilt looked like. Thanks for hosting the race. Loved it! My flckr ID is Shahann
I'm sure those who participated had lots of fun. I ended up not doing this for a couple of reasons. On Friday night my hubby was asking me how many quilts I had started (and I hadn't mentioned this one or the one I had ordered fabric for last week). He wasn't fussing, but just talking about it made me realize that I should be using my sewing time this weekend while he was working weekend duty to try and finish some things instead of starting a new one, no matter how fun it sounded especially a new one I don't have a purpose for. I still think I might try this sometime when I need something quick and fun for a gift or charity. I'm heading over to Flicker now to look at all the ones posted so far.
JUST FINISHED!!!! YAY! I really love the results...

I had so much fun, this was the first quilt that I've ever made. I'm hooked. Thanks for having the contest. I posted my pictures. My flickr name is nancy3833.
I posted my picture on Flickr as MoeWest. What a fun experience! I thought I would never get to the end on that first seam. It's interesting to see how the quilt turned out. I only had seven coordinating Christmas fabrics. I'd like to do one with a real jelly roll sometime.
I'm done ; it was fun ! flickr name is harleywife57 ;

thanks for the fun !!!
Thanks so much for sponsoring this 'race', it was super fun! I uploaded my photos. I finished last night, close to 11 EST... so I had to wait until morning for a photo. That was fun, and I'm quite pleased with the way my quilt top turned out. I do have one more jelly roll hanging around... hmmmm... another jelly roll race quilt top, perhaps??!!? Well I've scraped in! What great fun, Shawna, thank you!! Since joining in with the Quilting Book Club and now this, I've suddenly become productive, yay!! I've posted a pic of my completed quilt top to the Flickr group as WandaFish11. I had a few pit stops where family life got in the way, but really enjoyed the challenge and letting go of my perfectionist tendencies :)
Yippee Yahoo, I am done and ready to finish this baby for my bed this fall. I am calling my entry Pumpkins and Cranberries. I think it is stunning. Took me a little less then an hour to complete and I'm as slow as mud that has dried. LOL There isn't one ugly quilt in the whole bunch but really have you ever seen an ugly quilt? It is all art!! This was fun Shawna, let's do it again and again and again.........I am Jeanne Gwin on Flickr
Hi - I have mine done and the picture uploaded on Flickr. Thanks for hosting the race. My Flickr name is LittleRedHen2010.I do not have a blog so I will also email you the picture as you stated in the rules.
this was fun! First jelly roll quilt I have ever made. thanks again!
Wow, this was so much fun to do! I don't have a blog or a Flickr account, so I will email you the picture as requested. This was my first quilt I have ever made! Thank you for hosting the race!
Hi! I got to this too late for the race, but was wondering about the copyright and usage information. I haven't been able to find any information on whether we can make and sell a quilt made from this pattern (and I spent a lot of time looking!) Could you please let me know if we are able to sell a jelly roll quilt using these instructions? NOT selling the pattern - just the finished quilt :) THANK YOU! :)
That was fun...deviated a bit and made three baby quilts instead....if I do it next time I will cut them in half first and then sew them cuz there were lots of long strips...but all of them are quilted and waiting for the binding to get here from Shawna that I ordered today :)
I only got out of the start box at 5 pm today, cut my strips, sewed them together and voila: at 9pm my top was done. Just posted it on your flickr group under 'Barb in MI' and have a blog post about it here:
http://paintcreekquilt.blogspot.com/2011/05/jelly-roll-race.html
Loved the process and the result! Thanks so much for hosting! Will certainly use this pattern again.
I made two of these. I'll post on the flickr group, though I was late.
Oops! I forgot to post a comment on your blog. I did get my picture up in time on flickr. SewAmanda http://flic.kr/p/9NtWg7
I finished my on time and posted it but never left a comment....I never have been very good at following directions. :)
oh...not sure why but on here my user name is momof3boys but on flickr it shows up as hebrya1718.

sally at sallysangelworks dot com
I finished mine in 2 1/2 hrs, but that also included sewing the ends together...
duh... waiting for the pit crew to finish pressing before I post a pic....
